Turning Tool Holders

Precimill manufactures external and internal turning tool holders for the standard insert shapes, plus grooving and threading holders. Shanks are hardened and ground to the standard square sections used on conventional lathes, and modular and VDI-compatible connections are available for CNC machines.

The insert does the cutting, but the holder decides whether it repeats. Insert pocket wear, a seat that is not square to the shank, or a clamp that has lost its spring all show up as unexplained insert breakage or a size drift across a batch. Because the holder is reused hundreds of times, its condition matters more than any single insert.

The holder decides repeatability, not the insert

An insert is located by three surfaces in the pocket: the seat, the flank and the clamp. When any of those wear, the insert sits at a slightly different height or angle on every edge change.

The symptom is a slow drift in diameter that the operator corrects with the offset, which hides the cause until the insert breaks. Checking pocket wear is faster than replacing inserts at random.

External, internal and the reach problem

External holders are chosen by shank section, which follows the machine's tool post or turret. Internal boring bars are chosen by the bore they have to enter, and then by the overhang they have to span.

A boring bar that is small enough to enter the bore is frequently too slender to span the depth without chatter. That is the point at which a damped bar becomes the practical answer rather than a stronger steel bar.

Grooving and threading holders

Grooving holders locate the insert in a narrow seat, so the critical dimensions are the groove width repeatability and the axial position of the insert relative to the shank face. Threading holders share the geometry but add the requirement that the insert tip height stays consistent, because pitch error accumulates along the thread.

Both types are supplied matched to the insert they take, so the assembled tip height and the groove position are verified as a set rather than assumed.

Insert cost against edge cost

A holder is a one-time purchase; the insert is the recurring cost, and the number of usable edges per insert decides the true cost per edge far more than the unit price does.

A CNMG insert with a negative rake offers four usable corners, a WNMG trigon offers six. That difference is frequently larger than the price difference between brands, which is why the shape choice is a cost decision as well as a strength decision. Ask for a cost-per-edge comparison rather than a cost-per-insert one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know when a tool holder needs replacing?

When the insert pocket shows wear or a polished witness mark on the seating faces, when the clamp no longer holds the insert firmly by hand, or when the machine offsets drift in one consistent direction across insert changes. Any of those indicates pocket wear rather than an insert problem.

Which clamping method is best?

Top clamp for maximum rigidity on roughing and interrupted cuts, lever lock as the general production choice for fast and repeatable insert changes, and screw-on for small inserts and internal work where clearance is limited.

Do you supply holders matched to the inserts?

Yes, and it is the safer way to buy. The insert and holder are verified as a set, so the tip height and the axial position are correct when assembled rather than relying on each being separately within tolerance.

Can you supply holders for a machine turret I already have?

Yes. Send the turret interface, the VDI designation or the existing holder, and we will match the shank and the coupling. Non-standard shank sections are made to drawing.

Are internal boring bars available in damped versions?

Yes. When a bore is deep enough that a steel or carbide bar chatters, a tuned-mass damped bar extends the working overhang substantially. Tell us the bore diameter and depth and we will confirm which bar family suits.

Tell us the operation, get a tool recommendation

Send the operation, the workpiece material and its hardness, the machine interface and the diameter and depth you need. We reply within 8 working hours with a geometry, substrate and coating recommendation, and for specials a drawing for approval before anything is ground.

Tool drawings and part numbers can be emailed to [email protected]. We reply within 8 working hours. We do not share customer drawings or tooling with other customers.
